I have Windows 7. How do I access a CD that is compatible with Windows XP (SP2)?

I am a college student who recently purchased 'Elementary Statistics, Picturing the World, 4th edition. Authored by Larson/Farber, and published by Pearson/Prentice Hall. I have already contacted technical support, and searched Microsoft's website, but I still cannot view the material on the CD. Does anybody know whether or not there is an updated version, or if a patch is available? I am not a computer whiz, but I have followed the instructions offered by Windows and tech support, and nothing seems to work. Please Help!
