How can I become a great marching bass drum player?

I joined band to become a drummer but something came up I could not so I switched to flute. I only have one more marching season before I graduate and I would like to be on bass line at my school. I need help becoming not only a good bass drummer but a great bass drummer. Any tips and ideas would be wonderful help.
