How can i transfer my ipod touch songs from my ipod to the computer?

Well recently my computer crashed with all my songs and my old itunes. I reset it and had to get the new itunes version. Now i can't transfer my songs and i'm switching my ipod with a another friend of mine and i want all my songs. But every program i try i have to pay for and i'm not working right now. I also tried to get an older version of itunes but none of the downloads seemed to work. So i was wondering how i can transfer my songs for free to my itunes or a folder on my desktop. If you can give me a program that works or know a method that works please comment.
